KMC, known as Kangaroo Mother Care, refers to the combined practice of prolonged skin-to-skin contact (SSC) and breast milk feeding.
From the moment of birth, touch is so important for supporting a baby’s development.
When a baby is held close to a parent or carer in the first hour after birth, it helps regulate their heart rate, breathing, and temperature, while also supporting early bonding.
The World Health Organisation finds that benefits of KMC show a 32% reduction in neonatal mortality and 68% reduction in hypothermia at discharge or by 28 days after birth.
This ‘Kangaroo Care’ and has been particularly recommended by the World Health Organisation as an evidence-based way of supporting babies that are born too small or too early.
