Debbie Scott

Debbie Scott

Senior Communications Officer

Debbie has more than 20 years' experience in communications and public affairs. She began her career as a parliamentary aide for an MEP in the European Parliament before becoming a press officer for HM Official Opposition. One of her proudest achievements was helping establish the Armed Forces’ Covenant to ensure service personnel are never disadvantaged in the provision of public services. Debbie then transitioned into the corporate world, heading up the UK and Ireland Government Affairs team for Hewlett-Packard. During this time, Debbie was also a member of the Royal Naval Reserve. A notable role in this period was working as Public Relations Officer for London’s RNR unit, HMS President, for HM Queen Elizabeth II’s visit during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Debbie left HP when she became a mum to spend time enjoying those critical early days with her daughter. She went back to work part-time at engineering consultancy Atkins (now AtkinsRéalis), where she led a programme ensuring that the firm’s reservist and veteran employees’ talents and skills were recognised and effectively used. Debbie then set up her own freelance communications consultancy, through which she qualified as a copy editor and proofreader, working in the public relations space for organisations including Girlguiding UK.

Her time as a freelancer enabled Debbie to support her daughter during the early years of nursery and primary school. But, with secondary school just around the corner, the time was right for Debbie to return to full-time work. She could not find a more suitable and rewarding role than she has currently with 1001 Critical Days Foundation, where she combines her interest in welfare, love of babies, communications, campaigns and advocacy.
